Haizhen Wang London Fashion Week – AW17

Through the play of transition and the acknowledgement of transferring physicality, Haizhen Wang explores the notions of movement and direction, evolving around the theme of immigration, responding to the growing immigration crisis that currently exists. With indications of fragility exhibited through slogan badges of ‘fragile’, ‘handle with care’, ‘ priority’ and ‘air eligible’, models travelled between the setting of packaging and boxes, exhibiting garments that represented the necessities of existing in flux, a uniform to equip those who must immigrate. In fabrications of flat double wools, jacquards and devore, the play of line and texture suggested a disembodied representation, whilst being developed through wrapped waistlines, corseting and long belts, the reinforced notion of luggage, travel and passage prominent within Wang’s presentation. Through a colour palette of deep blues, red, black, ochre and khaki, impact was indeed created through the collection pieces, whilst still remaining feminine and utilitarian – making the most of what is useful for the Wang women whilst they embark upon their transitioning journeys. Indeed, for Wang’s Autumn/Winter 2017 collection, the pieces were elegantly created, whilst also maintaining a key and thoughtful subject awareness – an intelligently designed portrayal of one of the key matters of today.
