Matthew Miller showcased his SS18 ‘DEGENERATION’ collection, which was starkly contrasted by the setting of the show in a medieval church. The idea of degeneration, is to lose the physical, mental or moral qualities considered to be normal or desirable. Miller has each item of clothing produced in different countries, and are individually collared with different brands and designers, emphasising this idea of individuals being degenerate.
Miller’s idea to present his collection in a church setting and harmonic music before the show started was a useful tool to show the variation in clothing and setting. Once the show began the music changed and had meaningful lyrics which related to the theme of the ‘DEGENERATION’ collection. The lack of colour palette with monotone colours added to the grungy underground tone of the collection. The collection features; long coats, oversized shirts, dresses with trousers, strapping on clothing and textured dresses. Alongside the clothes the make-up added to the notion of a Gothic underground effect. Miller shows the idea of degeneration effectively through the minimalist monochrome style, which shows the evidence of decline by becoming reclusive.
