Designer Duo, Hugo Taylor and Charlie Morris are behind one of the coolest accessories brand at the moment; ‘Taylor Morris’. Founded in 2013, these two have come a long way. Their classic designs, fashion forward colour ways, and lense technologies have seen the brand expand, and being stocked in department stores across the globe. We caught up with them at LCM, in the Designer Showrooms, where they were showcasing their new collection, ‘The Explorer’.
The ‘Explorer’ collection pays homage to the incredible backdrops they have found themselves amongst. They credit beautiful natural landscapes, for instance, Namibia as a foundation for the colours and shapes the collection explores. The duo speak of their ideas and of how they wished their collections would look, however, it’s been the time and ability to travel that has given them the freedom to discover who they are and what they want their brand to encapsulate. They tell of their tales, adventures, exploring places off the beaten track, which provided the inspiration for much of the collection. From the metallic lenses to the texture in the acetate, the intricate brushed metal work and the injected colours. ‘Explorer’ takes elements from their travels, delicately playing with some classic styles whilst also providing modern twists. The collection heavily emphasises the idea of the ‘modern day explorer’.
With their brand going from strength to strength, many in the fashion world have wanted to work alongside the two young stars. However, a recent opportunity for collaboration with Morgan Moto Cars was one to peak their interest. A typically British brand, famous for ‘their quality materials and craftsmanship’s’, they draw many comparisons with Taylor Morris, creating the most fitting and exciting of collaborations.
The duo speak of their love for the very British, heritage and how when exploring, Morgan’s head of operations were hugely motivated by their architectural designs. They have taken inspiration from the metals and shapes of these incredible cars; the dash board, grill, the exhaust. They also wanted to explore the use of some newer technologies; in the form of non-reflection glasses, and flat lenses, really conveying a modern twist.
The duo are massively humbled by the positive reception they have received but also, is it evident, that they are incredibly hardworking and motivated by their brand. Their ethos is one of continual improvement and producing the highest quality accessories. As a pair, they have a natural flair for the design process, they complement one another. “Hugo has a deep understanding of the overall aesthetic of the sunglasses” says Charlie. Whereas Charlie finds himself the perfectionist, delving into the finer details. Embossing, is key to their signature style and three circles on the inner arm of the sunglasses represent ‘honesty, loyalty and generosity’, also fitting as there are three founding members.
As a brand that has no definitive or exclusive target audience, their unisex designs cater for all sunglass lovers, a true lifestyle brand that is both practical and glamourous.
